Unfortunately, we are not a general equine practice and do not cover first opinion requirements such as medical issues/colic/vaccines/dentistry. These should be directed to the first opinion practice of your choice.
Contact with OrthEQ can be made directly by yourself or referral via a first opinion practice. If a problem has been seen by another veterinarian it is preferable to get the history and any associated details of treatment given from your previous practice. This will always be useful for the case evaluation as well as being RCVS best practice. We will only ask for case history with your permission.
If a report is required, this can be provided at no extra cost. If the case has been referred from another vet, physio or other professional then we will always provide them a report following conclusion of the case.
OrthEQ does not cover first opinion conditions, which include all medical emergencies. Should any unforeseen emergencies occur as a direct result of assessment or treatment given, OrthEQ will always be available.
Visit fees are chargeable depending on distance. Other professional fees (examination fees and treatments) are variable depending upon the individual requirements of each case. This depends on the most appropriate examination and diagnostic steps. This is not a way of hiding costings, more so when discussing a new case once some details are known then we can often give accurate guidance on how much costs are likely to be.
We carry all the highest quality diagnostic equipment that is available in mobile form, anything we have, such as x-ray and ultrasound scanner, will always be in the car. This allows the vast majority of lameness issues to be worked up to a high standard. A relatively small number of cases require imaging modalities only available at referral hospitals. This includes MRI and Nuclear Scintigraphy (“Bone Scan”). When this arises, OrthEQ will use the best possible place for each given condition. We are totally independent and will always make every decision purely to give the best clinical outcome for your horse.
Our chief Veterinarian, Oscar Wain, has 20 years of experience in equine practice. For the past 10 years, he has specialised in lameness diagnostics and treatment. He received the RCVS post graduate qualification in Equine Lameness – in recognition of his expertise in this area.
When surgery is required, referral is made to the most appropriate hospital given location/client and patient factors and again this decision is always made to give the best clinical outcome possible. OrthEQ have good relations with several hospitals who provide a prompt and professional referral service.
A small number of minor procedures which can be done safely and to an adequate standard are performed “in the field” at client’s premises.
OrthEQ specialises in just lameness to provide the client with a better level of expertise, time and experience of orthopaedic problems. This is because these are the cases we like seeing, but also it means we can provide the client with a dedicated level of service knowing we will not have to cancel appointments having been called to see emergency conditions. As importantly, you are paying for our time and this allows us to our complete focus to your case.
OrthEQ treat a plethora of different types of horses; Thoroughbreds, Sports Horses and Leisure Horses. Regardless of monetary value each horse gets treated with the same ethos.
Whether your horse is insured or not again makes no difference. We treat insured and non-insured cases the same way. That is to discuss all available diagnostic and treatment options, including their respective costs from the outset. Then progress as desired.
