Lameness Consultancy

Accurate Diagnosis

An accurate diagnosis enables an array of treatment options to be deployed quickly, giving both horse and client the fastest route to successful management of each given problem. No two lameness cases will present in the same way. But the initial approach to each case will involve:

  • Clinical Examination – thorough palpation/inspection is the starting point to any case
  • Lameness Detection – seeing the horse move on various surfaces including under saddle to allow the highest threshold of lameness detection
  • Diagnostic Investigation – nerve/joint/bursal blocks to localise any lameness
  • Focused Imaging (Mobile Digital Radiography and Ultrasonography)
  • Access to the best Hospital Imaging (MRI/CT/Nuclear Scintigraphy) and Surgical services

Treatment Options

The treatment options for treating lameness cases take various forms and may often be combined but are used on a case specific basis.

These include but not exhaustively:

Joint Medications – options include Anti-inflammatory (Cortisone most commonly), Biological treatments (Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Alpha 2EQ, Pro-Stride, Stem Cell Therapy (Arti-Cell Forte), Plastic Polymers and Hydrogel. The most suitable treatment depends on a variety of factors and can be made on a case by case basis

Systemic Medication – Both oral anti-inflammatory, intravenous and intramuscular treatments including pentosan polysulphate (Cartrophen/Osteopen/Arthropen), polysulphated glycosaminoglycan (Adequan) and bisphosphonates (Tildren/Osphos)

Oral Supplementation – used as an adjunctive treatment of many conditions both articular and non articular

Farriery – in foot and non foot lameness working in conjunction with farriers to ensure foot balance and type of shoe is correct for each given condition/horse

Physiotherapy/Chiropractor/Osteopath Treatment – often working in conjunction with existing therapists to aid a rehabilitation programme. A collaborative approach yields better long term outcomes in the majority of cases
